I was there. It was Neil Orr's slip against Chelsea at home that lost us the title

I wonder how many other decisions Liverpool got in their favour in that run in. To get 34 out of 36 points is brilliant but I bet they got some generous refereeing along the way - they were especially renowned for it back then!

Why could Chelsea not have scraped a draw in that last game?

31 years and the pain is still as strong!

Seem to remember that West Midland's finest were in good form. Bloke in front of me got grabbed and dragged out when celebrating the last goal. All he was doing was jumping up and down like the rest. Wouldn't let us on Smethwick station and insisted we had to walk to Birmingham. Started to walk to Brum only to be stopped and turned back because other police insisted that the station was the only option!

Bit of a kick off in the West Brom end at one point.

As I mentioned below, before the Walsh dive and Stewart sending off, I thought we could easily have won at Anfield (NB, that's different from winning easily!).

Then, if all the other results had remained the same, we would have won the League.

That is the biggest reason, and as Athletico Easthamico says we didn't exactly get off to a flyer.

To my mind, Liverpool cheated us out of one Championship, one FA Cup and one League Cup...

And who knows what we lost out on because of Heysel

Actually the Forest away game never helped either... Johnny Metgod anyone?? I think Parksey is still counting his digits to make sure they are still all there...

It was Man Utd who had the best start, as they won their first ten games, including beating us 2-0 at OT. Imagine doing that and not even finishing top three!

Sadly they got rid of Ron Atkinson and replaced him with Ferguson in November 1986 and the rest is history...

Re: West Brom 2 West Ham 3 . 1986
Main thing to blame was a piss poor start to the season. Must have given Liverpool and Everton a ten point start before we got into our stride.

Another one to throw in the mix was Arsenal away. McAvennie didn't have his shooting boots on that day. Missed 2 or 3 one on ones with Lukic.

Then Woodcock handled from a corner and rifled into the net. Alvin went charging around up front to get the equaliser, lost it, chinned O'Leary and got sent off.

The players say that they didn't give a fuck about the Everton match, as we couldn't win the league, but they didn't realise that if they'd finished above Everton, then we would've played in the Charity Shield, as Liverpool won the double.
Thick twats.

3-1, swiss, but no less of an anti-climax.

What killed us was the weather in Jan-Feb and the 3 replays in the Cup v Ipswich Town...

The Chelsea mld week 1-2 game killed us.

It did me... I was locked out... funny as all through that season was never a problem getting in the ground... typical part time glory hunting percies coming out the woodwork

The Chelsea mld week 1-2 game killed us. Nevin header of all things. Having to stand in the North Bank pissed me off as I seem to remember they gave Chelsea all of the South Bank or we were late.

I couldn't imagine us going on to win at Anfield but who knows with our best ever team?! Only drawing with them 2-2 at home also turned out to be costly.

IIRC we should've won that one as well!

Got the train down from Yorkshire and it was full of mad Geordies on their way to Leicester. Got questioned where we were going and had to make out we had no interest in football!
Can remember being held back outside Smethwick Rolfe Street until more West Ham came then given a big escort to the ground, passing a pub and recognising a face off "Hooligan".
